Hi, my name is Matthew Bourne.  I just finished my freshman year at Northern Michigan University and I am originally from St. Paul Minnesota. I have really enjoyed my time in Montana so far this summer. I have learned a lot already about other training methods and have also met a lot of cool athletes.  Many of these athletes I may have known about but did not know anything about others seeing on the racecourse.  I have found that it is a nice transition to train and become friends with other athletes. The endless trails and roads in and around Bozeman are phenomenal. Because of all these trails, we have been able to ski and run in different places almost every day.

One of my main goals for this summer was to get stronger overall but specifically in my legs and hips. The Mountain Project gym and Andys strength plan have definitely helped so far towards that goal. We have been focusing on general strength and we will be moving into max strength next week. Yesterday we did an L3 skate rollerski up Triple Tree trail,  I found this workout to be very helpful because it was mostly uphill so if you went out of your zone you would feel it for the rest of the workout. Then in the afternoon, we went to The Mountain Project to get in a lifting session. In most of our gym sessions, I have noticed a lot of glute activation and glute strengthening. I really didn't ever use my glutes skiing.  Because of these strength exercises I have now been able to fire my glute muscles while roller skiing and it already seems to be helping my technique and speed. It has also helped enable me to generally lift more weight. Today we were at bear canyon for a point to point trail run that I haven't done before. It was super muddy and we got a bit wet.

In my free time, I am able to get a little fishing in.  Bozeman is an awesome area to hit trout streams. I am super excited to see how the rest of the summer goes! Keep checking for other athlete's posts.
