Adapting to Smoke During a Volume Week

Hello!

I am writing to you all from my tent in Jackson as I take in a view of the Tetons. Just a few minutes ago, I finished my last workout of our volume week, so I figured this was the perfect time to recap this big block of training for you all.

This week’s focus was to get in some quality hours as it was one of our last “big” weeks of the summer/fall. The BSF team started the week with some classic skiing and speeds on Tuesday. Personally, I have been trying to work on my snappiness and sprinting, so this workout really honed in on that. During the afternoon we did some mountain biking and watched the smoke roll into town. On Wednesday morning we woke up to a very hazy sky and some extremely bad air quality.

As the fires from the west coast continue to burn, the smoke in Bozeman has also continued to be quite bad. Since we were pretty concerned about hurting our lungs in the bad air, the team did our L4 running intervals inside on treadmills. Although this indoor workout wasn’t what we were planning for, it ended up being a really quality session that I think we all benefitted from.

(And in the PM we had a strength session)

Thursday was another indoor workout day for most of us as the smoke continued linger in the air. Grinding through three hours on the stationary bike and treadmill was a bit mentally challenging—but we got it done. After this long session (and all the workouts this week) I have been trying to make sure I fuel myself as we have been putting in a lot of hours.

(Cookies and pancakes = great fuel)

Friday morning Lauren and I did a ride on some trails near our house. The two of us are living in an apartment together in Bozeman which has been super fun!

Friday afternoon I headed out to Jackson with my sister to meet my parents for the weekend. So far, we have done lots of biking and hiking around the Tetons and are planning on doing a 20 mile run tomorrow.

As for now, I am looking forward to a nice, chill recovery week before we head to Park City for our next training camp! I hope you are all staying healthy and clear of the smoke.

Thanks for reading!!
