Well, the we havent lost snow to the warm up, but everything in town has transformed. We are planning to shape up our venues as best we can for Sunday skiing. Sunset Hills and Highland Glen will get a good grooming from the Pisten Bully and will probably be fast, fun skating. Classic tracks may be on the icy side. Sunday is day 2 of Sit Ski Nationals at Sunset Hills, so come check out the distance races. There will be signs and course marshals out and about, so if are at Sunset Hills in the morning, plan to spectate and save your skiing for Highland Glen or later in the day. Bridger Creek will get a touch up as well and hopefully have good skating.
Sourdough is an interesting case right now. The first mile will be extremely icy and it will be difficult to improve it with a snowmobile. We will focus our grooming effort there almost entirely on the first 3 miles of trail. I skied there this evening and at about mile 2.5, there is fresh snow, perhaps a quarter inch or so, and the skiing improves dramatically. Above the bridge, in fact, the skiing is nearly perfect for skate or classic. So, thanks to the weather, we will not groom above the bridge, but will do all we can below with the snowmobile as the Pisten Bully is tied up in town.
Please use extreme caution when skiing the first 2 miles of Sourdough and keep a sharp eye out for grooming equipment if you are out late night or early morning. We have a lot to pay attention to and part of the reason for operating in the dark is to avoid people. If you see active grooming machinery, please yield to the opposite side of the trail from the machine. Often people stop right in front of us as we are trying to set classic tracks, which in Sourdough we always do going downhill, so please keep an eye for where we are and what direction we are going.
lastly, the Forest Service groomed Hyalite Friday and the trace of snow today will hopefully make for good skiing up there.
Cheers!
