BSF coach builds a Montana chapter to get veterans and active service members on the river and outside

We love seeing what our coaches do off the clock, and we're especially proud of Coach Orion Helm's efforts with Team River Runner.

For the last several summers, Orion Helms, head coach for BSF's Freestyle Development Team, has been helping blind veterans paddle the Yellowstone River through Team River Runner at the Out of Sight Clinic. That amazing experience led him to start a Montana chapter of Team River Runner, along with some friends. This summer, they began getting veterans and active service members and their families outside in Montana. "The goal is provide health and healing through paddle sports," says Orion.

They do free open pool sessions every Wednesday night in Bozeman and host a paddling trip on a Montana river once a month in the summer.

A former U.S. Ski Team national team member, Orion skied in several world cup mogul events and has been coaching with BSF Freestyle since 2014. He's also a seasoned paddler, guide and paddling instructor. Today, the Freestyle Devo Program is lucky to have him as their fearless coach. They spend the weekends at Bridger Bowl skiing moguls, hitting the terrain park, and exploring the ridge terrain--and it's a great fit for any kid who wants to have a blast adventuring around the mountain, all while still building Freestyle and Freeski skills.
